August 1/07

Well we had our first show tonight. I'm so relieved it's over. It was beyond stressful as you can see from the expression on Deb's face in the above photo. This experience has brought me back to my Toronto fringe days when you'd have an hour for tech and fifteen minutes to set up before your show. We got to the theatre, The Gilded Balloon, (see above photo) for 5:30pm. Our show was at 6pm. The show before us didn't vacate the dressing room until 5:45pm. Now that may not seem so bad but if you've ever seen us before a show you'll know that was not remotely enough time to get ready. Luckily we did our make-up at the house and just had to get dressed, set props, get our mics on and go.

It was surreal going from playing to sold out crowds of 800 plus in Canada to a 350 seat theatre with 30 people in it. They were a great crowd. Laughing but obviously a little quiet. SO hard to gauge how it went over but I think people liked it. We were so afraid they would just stare at us wondering what the hell we were talking about. But they didn't. After the show a couple of young stand ups approached us and said, "I heard you guys have a great show." What? How did they hear that so fast? That is how this festival works. Word of mouth. It runs like wild fire through this festival. Let's hope it works for us.

Kathy's kids, Phoebe and Josie, and her husband John came to the show. And Deb's son Luke came as well. We all hung out after in the bar beside the theatre. Very fun. Josie and Phoebe are the sweetest little girls and we had a great time tonight. Then we went to an amazing Indian restaurant not far from the theatre. All twelve of us. It was a Bring Your Own Wine restaurant. But you could also go the pub beside the restaurant, get a drink and bring it up. I love the UK! So civilized. We had a lovely meal and walked home as the sun set over the moors. This city is spectacular. So alive. Especially during the fringe. People walking along the Royal Mile, the cobble stone road leading to the castle, dressed in costume trying to get people to come to their shows. It is very exciting. We don't have a full show tomorrow. It's a journalists showcase and Kathy and Jayne are just doing a short scene from the show. Not sure what I'm going to do tomorrow. Just walk, take pictures, maybe go see the Picasso exhibit or the Warhol exhibit. I love this town!
